Overall workflow in producing cases for matched-guise experiments based on gender stereotypes
There are several things to take into account when producing a 'RAVE-case'. Firstly one has to consider the learning context one is working in. The topic of the case obviously has to be relevant to the subject and formulated in such a way that participants think it is relevant, while at the same time not revealing the real purpose of the experiment.
Then there is the production of a script and the recording of the basic manuscript. Important factors to consider here are aspects such as length and content, but also the voice quality of the actors. Some voices respond well to voice-morphing whereas other voices do not. This is largely a matter of trial and error. |
The actual voice-morphing is tricky. There are several online tools to achieve this, but one can slo use more professional sound editing programs.
Finally, packaging the recording (images, embedding response questionnaires etc.) is also something that requires various considerations. Is the experiment going to be conducted in a computer lab, or from mobile devices such as smartphones or Ipads? What is connectivity like? You may even be working off-line, in which case different methods apply. Below you will find more specific information about these various aspects, information based on our experiences in the project. |
