Response surveys
An important part of the RAVE method is measuring the effects of the matched-guise experiment and the following debriefing - to analyse the partcipants' responses. Here we can distinguish between two types of measurements of responses that are needed. First, in order to identify any differences between the two groups who listen to the manipulated recordings, each manipulated session is immediately followed by a survey, a perception test, in which the participants will have to react to the dialogue that they have just listened to. The results from this perception test then serve as the starting point for the discussions during the debriefing, that is, the awareness-raising activity. The nature of the perception test is further described below.
Second, in order for the researchers to measure and identify any changes in awareness or other dimensions as a result of the matched-guise experiment AND the debriefing, the particpants are asked to fill in a pre-survey well before the activity. This pre-survey provides a baseline to which later results can be compared. If the participants are students in a course, the pre-test is normally taken before the start of the course, and another pre-test is taken before the matched-guise experiement is conducted. This procedure will identify any impact of the course and give an additional point of reference regarding the mapping of awareness raising. Finally the same test is also taken after the debriefing session during which the students were exposed to the nature of the matched-guise experiment and the results of the perception test. Thus, this post test measures any impact of the debriefing session.
